Johannes Langenbach

Johannes is a drummer from Germany, based in the Frankfurt area. He has been playing drums for more than thirty years, mainly in jazz, but his musical background reaches far beyond one genre. Like many musicians, he began by playing in rock bands and local orchestras — the traditional German Blaskapelle — before finding a deeper connection to jazz.
A major influence on his musical path was one of his early teachers, whose approach still shapes the way Johannes plays and teaches today. In a rather unconventional way for a drummer, one of the first records his teacher introduced him to was Keith Jarrett’s The Köln Concert. It took Johannes several years to fully understand why this recording had been chosen. His teacher wanted him to approach the drums from a truly musical perspective — with sound, groove and feel placed before technique, speed or flashy chops.
Another important encounter was with a guitarist and pianist who was already very advanced at the time and later became one of Johannes’ closest friends. Together, they explored many different musical genres over the years, constantly learning, experimenting and growing as musicians. Their musical connection continues to this day.
For Johannes, studying music and turning it into a profession felt like the only natural path. Although he never planned it in a strategic way, he has become a versatile all-round drummer over time. This developed from his genuine enjoyment of playing different genres and styles — and from his interest in finding the right feel for each musical situation.
At the center of his playing is always the music itself: listening closely, shaping the sound, supporting the groove and creating the feeling that allows a piece to come alive.
